An essential companion to the New Testament in Greek. Venerable textual scholar Bruce Metzger's almost line-by-line commentary on the variation in the ancient manuscripts of the New Testament in Greek. (These variations appear in the running footnotes of scholarly Greek New Testaments.)

(Ancient books were copied by hand and often developed regional 'families' as certain local versions became traditional -- comparing every copy of a book would have required impossible travel and expense. Even the most careful scribes corrected what they saw as theological, grammatical, and spelling errors in their texts ... often moving the text away from original readings. (With the exception of Luke the Gospel authors did not write the best Greek.))

A helpful companion to the New Testament in Greek.

This is a necessary tool for the serious student of Koine Greek. Textual variants are important considerations in translating the Bible for yourself or for seminary papers or publication. Boring to just read (there is no plot, heh heh), it is indispensable as a research tool. ( )

PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION
The present volume is designed to serve as a companion to the third edition of the United Bible Societies' Greek New Testament, edited by Kurt Aland, Matthew Black, Carlo M. Martini, Bruce M. Metzger, and Allen Wikgren.
PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
The present edition of this Textual Commentary has been adapted to the fourth revised edition of The Greek New Testament, published by the German Bible Society on behalf of the United Bible Societies early in 1993.
INTRODUCTION
Most commentaries on the Bible seek to explain the meaning of words, phrases, and ideas of the scriptural text in their nearer and wider contest; a textual commentary, however, is concerned with the poor question, What is the original text of the passage?
