I liked this book because it was a rhyming book. It covers a family moving west to California. I can use this book in my social studies classroom to introduce the gold fever era and the western frontier. ( )

The family of pioneers are headed to California to the Sacramento Valley. They are traveling along the California Trail in a covered wagon. Needless to say, Mother, Father, and baby John are up against some cruel elements along the way. From bad weather to the sweltering heat to frigid snow, the family pushes forward until they reach the Sacramento Valley and begin to build their log cabin and reestablish their lives. ( )

This book shows the timeline of baby John and how long it took to journey to California. When the book starts baby John is an infant and at the end of the book he appears to be about 4 to 5 years old. In addition, it was written in poetry, which I think helped the message come across more clearly and also in more engaging way. The author depicted the Mom, Dad, and Baby John's point of view of their journey in a very positive way, therefore keeping the story feeling upbeat and bringing light to the hardships they faced. Altogether, I think the poetic rhyming schemes add a good twist to the story which would keep the young readers more engaged! ( )

I really enjoyed this book I think it did a great job displaying the timeline of the story, through the growth of baby john. This shows just how long it took for people to make this journey. At the beginning of the story, the boy is an infant, and at the end he is walking and seems to be a toddler. I think this story does a great job showing the hardships of traveling on a journey like this, but in the end they made it to their destination and started their new life. ( )

This book depicts a family journeying on a "Bumpy Trail" during the westward expansion. We see the ups and downs of a pioneer family that chose to move west during this time. Mother, Father, and Baby John have struggles along the way, but the author keeps an upbeat attitude, hinting to the reader that they'll be alright. I particularly enjoyed the detailed illustrations that went along with the stanzas on each page. The book also has a fun rhyming scheme that would be especially helpful to our early readers. ( )
