"Steven Forrest's timeless astrology classic The Inner Sky remains a groundbreaking exploration into an astrology based on freedom and choice rather than deadening predictions. Still one of the best and most frequently recommended astrology primers for beginners, The Inner Sky guides the reader into a profoundly rich and empowering evolutionary cosmology that frames life within a context of possibility, hope, and wonder."--Page 4 of cover.… (mere)

The first astrology I read, back in 1985. Forrest's Jungian Archetypal metaphors launch tired old astrology chiches out of their superstition-encrusted boxes. All call for poet-astrologers. ( )

Now the fundamental madness or abnormality of men lies in the divergence between essence and personality. The more nearly a man knows himself for what he is, the nearer he approaches wisdom. The more his imagination about himself diverges from what he actually is, the madder he becomes. —Rodney Collin

Chapter One: WHY BOTHER?
People change.
Yet one assumption runs like a virus through most astrological writing: people do not change. “Scorpios are sexy, but cannot be trusted; Capricorns are industrious; Pisceans are cosmic, but too spacy to balance their checkbooks.” Even in advanced texts we find similar assertions: “a negatively aspected Venus suggests promiscuity.” Changeless, rigid statements. From Ptolemy right up through Linda Goodman, the astrological symbols have been interpreted as pieces of psychological machinery. We are blessed or cursed with them at birth and stuck with them until we die.
It is a lie.

Astrology cannot solve that riddle for us. But perhaps it can carry us a little closer, make us a little wiser. In astrology, we are the border dwellers. We are the ones who live on the shoreline, where waves of consciousness break on the rocks and dunes of the physical world. We exist in both, and both are reflected in us.
In astrology, we are the dreamers, and what we are dreaming is the universe.
