Descartes is a breath of fresh air in the philosophical timeline. He puts forth the first new philosophy since Plato and Aristotle. Those before him basically modified Plato and Aristotle. Descartes famous quote is thankfully not repeated as a chorus through the book. This edition is heavy on biography and the scientific side of Descartes. He developed the Cartesian Graph and analytical geometry. An interesting life of detachment from people and the inability to settle down in one place. A military man who didn't fight and believed in sleeping in until noon certainly an interesting person. ( )

I love the way that the author compares Descarte's Theory of Vortices to the double helix of DNA and Superstring Theory. This is just one of the many ways he attempts to explain the radical thinking of this incredibly influential modern thinker. The language is simplistic but thought provoking and excites the mind to want to delve deeper into the philosophies of this inspiring individual.
At the same time Paul Strathern paints a rather amusing picture of Descarte as a bourgeois gentilhomme which has you laughing out loud in stitches, which isn't bad going for a book on 17th century philosophy.
The book serves its purpose precisely.
90 minutes well spent! ( )

Descartes en 90 minutos es uno de los primeros de una serie de libros desenfadados y distintos que presentan la vida y la obra de los filósofos más importantes. ( )
