The birth of Jesus has been well chronicled, as have his glorious teachings, acts, and divine sacrifice after his thirtieth birthday. But no one knows about the early life of the Son of God, the missing years--except Biff, the Messiah's best childhood friend, who has been resurrected to tell the story.… (mere)

Who's Afraid of Beowulf? af Tom Holt (Dr.Science)
Dr.Science: The English author Tom Holt is relatively unknown in America, but very popular in England. If you enjoy Jasper Fforde or Christopher Moore you will most certainly enjoy Tom Holt's wry sense of English humor and the absurd. He has written a number of excellent books including Expecting Someone Taller, and Flying Dutch, but they may be difficult to find at your library or bookstore.… (mere)

the_awesome_opossum: Only Begotten Daughter is darker and less whimsical than Lamb, but the protagonist - the daughter of God - also struggles with her divinity and purpose on Earth. It is funny in spots, but in a more wry and satirical way. So if you liked the more serious parts of Lamb, try this book… (mere)

You can tell about the zany humor just from the title. What surprised me was how touching this novel was. I've never cried at the story of the crucifixion before. Even more surprising was the spin this novel had on the crucifixion—instead of a mindless act of violence or the act of an inhuman and bloodthirsty god, good old Josh of Nazareth made the ultimate personal sacrifice in order to make a point that made sense to me for once. This was a good read and there were several clever and funny parts in the story. I liked the idea of Biff (Levi) as an actual person from the Bible and that he was a realistic if a bit too modern companion to Joshua. I liked the brash humor that, at times, made Joshua seem more human and took away some of the more saintly edges of how he has been depicted in the past.

I laughed out loud at "Surrender Dorothy". It might be my favorite part in the entire book.

I felt like the book became less interesting after they left Balthasar. So much time and effort was put into depicting life there that when they left, the other two places were thin and less interesting. Once they leave and head back to Jerusalem, the story rushes through to hit some major points, the character of Joshua is less likable and harder to connect with.

When it comes to the crucifixion I was just ready for the book to end. There was such a wide gulf between Biff and the Joshua he had grown up with and loved that I didn't feel like they were close at all any more.

I feel like a lot of work and learning went into creating this book. I like the weaving of the historical with the fiction. The revision of the history of Jesus doesn't bother me. I just wish it would have ended sooner.

I discovered Christopher Moore while reading the articles of a Playboy Magazine. They said he was the funniest thing they'd ever read. Playboy never steers any young male wrong, so I thought what the hell and picked this up. I laughed my ass off. Angel who dons a Spidey suit? Check. There's other stuff, but that's all you really need to know. ( )

This book is laugh-out-loud funny. I'm sure I drew some strange looks while reading it in public. Absolutely wonderful writing.

Be sure to read the author's notes at the end of the book. Very enlightening. ( )

It had some funny moments and even a few moving ones but by the end of the book I just wasn't sure what the author had been trying to accomplish. ( )

"Lamb" is an incredibly compelling work even for readers who don't agree with Moore's conclusions. The book is also laugh out loud funny at times, which really helps during some of more irreverent parts of the story.

If you have come to these pages for laughter, may you find it.
If you are here to be offended, may your ire rise and your blood boil.
