A great concept with uninspired execution. It starts off with a lot of energy and good insight into the creation of the document, but once it gets into the nitty-gritty of articles and amendments, it can't transcend the drudgery of reading the real thing. ( )

A clever and unique look at the history of the U.S. Constitution shown in a graphic novel. The authors obviously know their history as evidenced by the combining of facts with great artwork depicting the points being made in each scene. My only complaint is that in a few places the words are cut off in the layout of the book. Perhaps it is only this copy? Otherwise this is a great resource of social studies teachers. ( )

Just in time for the U.S. elections, Hennessey and McConnell's eminently readable, graphical history hits the shelves. Rather than just reprinting the original text, the duo wisely relies on a m effective combination of words and pictures to place the Constitution within its fascinating historical context. Not only do they explain the document itself, they also reveal the story behind many of the amendments as well as the struggles between the federalist and anti-federalist camps. This riveting, all-ages graphic novel clearly explains and relays the exciting origins of the defining document of the U.S. Government. ( )

I chose to teach history because I firmly believe that understanding the root of an issue, situation, entity, or thing (literally any thing at all), is essential to deeply understanding the thing itself. However, my recollection of Constitutional history lessons from high school included knowing the articles and amendments, analyzing their implications, and applying that to situations. That practice was no doubt useful, but the extent of the historical context ended with Federalist vs Antifederalist and large state vs small state.

Jonathan Hennessey's graphic novel, The United States Constitution turned that experience on its head, and I enthusiastically look forward to using it in my classroom next year.

Mixing historical events with figurative and imaginative scenarios (many of which resurface throughout the book), the book travels through US Constitution, spanning the Preamble to the 27th Amendment. By combining descriptions of the historical necessity for each article and amendment with modern scenarios and humorous anecdotes, the book brings the US dogma to life in a way that makes sense to those of use who regard law history as the most boring genre of history.

Using quotes from people and the Constitution, while also using vivid and sometimes ridiculous images, the book takes a unique tone. The words are often grave and hyperserious, but the images on the same page might usefully and creatively resemble mythology, science fiction, animism, or anachronism.

Like many of the graphic novels I have recently read, this one neglects to make use of a bibliography. However, it does contain a suggested reading list.

A reader looking for a no-nonsense nonfiction historical account of the Constitution's birth might want to stay away from this book, but someone looking for a deep understanding of the document should embrace it. ( )

Likes: This book presents the United States Constitution in an engaging way. The graphics add humor and life. I'd recommend it as a supplement to those teens studying the Constitution in school.

Dislikes: I can't see teens seeking this out on their own, except for those teens who already enjoy history and non-fiction. Adults would probably prefer more meaty commentary and interpretation, but could still find it fun. ( )

You'd be hard-pressed to find a better primer for bringing the kids, foreigners and forgetful in your life up to speed on the niceties of the supreme law of the USA so that you can have these discussions.
