Persepolis is the story of Marjane Satrapi's childhood and coming of age within a large and loving family in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution; of the contradictions between private life and public life in a country plagued by political upheaval; of her high school years in Vienna facing the trials of adolescence far from her family; of her homecoming--both sweet and terrible; and, finally, of her self-imposed exile from her beloved homeland.… (mere)

Even before finishing this book, I already knew it would become one of my favorites ever. It's so clever, sad, funny, informative.. I don't know what took me so long to begin with it , but these two days reading it were very rewarding. ( )

Persepolis is a graphic novel and autobiography charged with emotion and truth, for which I appreciate it greatly. There were certain moments, universal moments, which had placed me in thought about myself in relation to my surroundings. I've also learnt a great deal about the lives of those living in the Middle-East, though with little depth (this book shall serve as a starting point for myself to learn more about that). The acts of rebellion I found very inspiring, and some troubled characters deeply relatable, and was therefore able to produce revelations of my own while immersed in Satrapi's personal world.

That being said, I do not feel that profound impact on myself that a subjectively great work has (I don't feel that I'll remember most this book in a year's time, only time will tell), and therefore cannot give it a perfect score. However, if a 4.5 stars were possible, that would be my rating. ( )

I reads most of Persepolis when it originally came out standing around in a Borders one day, and chunks of the second book from online sources. I finally picked up the combined version now that it is out as a movie and being released in the US.

I have great fondness for autobiographical graphic novels - Safe Area Gorazde, Maus, Palestine, etc. Persepolis treads largely the same ground as Reading Lolita in Tehran, except the viewpoint is a bit more personal and the images of a graphic novel bring the upheaval of the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War closer to home.

For understanding Iran, this book comes highly recommended. It is a bit easier than pushing Iranian blogs through translators to see what is going on there: a population held captive by totalitarian fascists who dress themselves up in pretend Islamic clothing and claim their power from God.

It's a depressing book, but definitely a worthwhile read.

Persepolis was originally published in 4 volumes. Some later editions, especially in the U.S., combined volumes 1-2 into one work Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood; volumes 3-4 were combined into Persepolis: The Story of a Return. Keep this in mind when combining/separating.
This is the Complete Persepolis (books 1-4 or books I+II).
Some editions such as ISBN 009952399X are only called Persepolis, but contain the Complete Persepolis.
