For this biography of Edward VII, Sir Philip Magnus was the first allowed unrestricted access to all material in the Royal Archives. Sir Philip has also enjoyed the additional advantage of unrestricted access to collections of papers and documents which are still in private hands or privately controlled. King Edward is exhibited as a man, prince and king with many admirable qualities and with a number of defects which the passage of time no longer requires to be concealed. 865 King Edward the Seventh, by Philip Magnus (read 27 Aug 1966) Magnus does a workmanlike job on the biographies he does, and this book is no exception. But it is pretty much the 'official' biography, so does not delve too deeply, as I remember it, into the more scandalous aspects of its subject. ( )
