The weakest Sanderson book I've read since Well of Ascension but still pretty good. ( ![]() I'm still wavering between a 4.5 and 5 star rating so I rounded up to 5 stars. This book was so enjoyable! This book was equal parts comedy and tragedy. It can be light hearted and fun but very serious when needed. It was such a treat to read. Likable characters abound in this one. I was hard pressed to find one I absolutely hated and wanted to die. If you are looking to get into adult fantasy then this book would be an excellent place to start. I'm really hoping to get more from this world and characters in the future! A very pleasant change of pace from my usual fare. It's a fantasy world with a well thought out (and somewhat over-explained) magical system to it. The nice part is the system actually affects how things are done rationally, and shows up in unexpected details here and there. The characters are pretty well done compared to most of the fantasy I've read as well - each is an individual, and not one dimensional. They can be pretty naïve (if not downright stupid) from time to time, but they each have their own set of characteristics that change and develop as the novel progresses. The real highlight of the novel for me were Denth and Lightsong's endless stream of commentary and wit. For instance - "You have to believe in something. If not a religion, then somebody. A way of living." and
There were a bunch of surprises along the way - some fairly obvious, some completely unexpected. Just enough of both to make it fun to guess what happens next, and not always be right. Heck, even the ending was pretty much a complete ending, while still leaving room for sequels. Definitely worth a look. Half-baked magical system that reads like an RPG rule set combined with weak characters and a flimsy story. Plus some dismal, flat humor. I'm shocked that this isn't a first novel. It's hard to believe that Sanderson wrote this after the Misborn series. Just as enjoyable the second time around, even though I remembered most of the twists and turns!
After reading Warbreaker, it's readily apparent that Brandon Sanderson is an extremely talented author. The novel was a real page turner and was filled with wonderful characters and thoughtful original ideas. Sanderson's prose falls into a nice rhythm that helps to move the action forward. Multifaceted characters and action of both the mystical and sword-fighting realms bring added excitement to a complex and creative read. "Warbreaker" is an improvement on Sanderson's other work. And if he continues to follow along this path, fans of the Wheel of Time series will have nothing to worry about. But the narrative is richer, spinning together hilarious dialogue, descriptive action sequences, and genuinely sweet romance. The system of magic is also novel ... and demands far more of the characters' ingenuity, which in turn demands developing them--male and female, divine and mortal--to a far higher degree than one expects of much fantasy these days. Sanderson again demonstrates his capacity for handling large and complex themes while creating believable characters. Hæderspriser
Fantasy.
Fiction.
After bursting onto the fantasy scene with his acclaimed debut novel, Elantris, and following up with his blockbuster Mistborn trilogy, Brandon Sanderson proves again that he is today's leading master of what Tolkien called "secondary creation," the invention of whole worlds, complete with magics and myths all their own. Warbreaker is the story of two sisters, who happen to be princesses, the God King one of them has to marry, the lesser god who doesn't like his job, and the immortal who's still trying to undo the mistakes he made hundreds of years ago. Their world is one in which those who die in glory return as gods to live confined to a pantheon in Hallandren's capital city and where a power known as BioChromatic magic is based on an essence known as breath that can only be collected one unit at a time from individual people. By using breath and drawing upon the color in everyday objects, all manner of miracles and mischief can be accomplished. It will take considerable quantities of each to resolve all the challenges facing Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris; Susebron the God King; Lightsong, reluctant god of bravery, and mysterious Vasher, the Warbreaker.
