When Jose Canseco burst into the Major Leagues in the 1980s, he changed the sport--in more ways than one. No player before him possessed his mixture of speed and power. He shattered the mold of the out-of-shape baseball player and ushered in a new era of superathletes who looked like bodybuilders, made outrageous salaries, and enjoyed rock-star lifestyles. And the ticket for this ride? Steroids. Canseco cultivated a secret just about everyone in major league baseball knew about, one that would alter the game and the way we view our heroes forever.… (mere)

It may have taken Jose a week to write this book, but maybe that was the charm that kept me reading it. You certainly get to know Canseco, roids and all, and you quickly learn to doubt much of what he writes. That said, it’s clear that those he named did in fact engage in the steroid use he writes of. This quickly written book managed to change our view of sports forever. ( )

For baseball fans, this is an important book, but not a very good one. With what we have seen over the last several years, it is hard not to believe what he has to say about others using steroids. It is a sad story . . . ( )

Canseco seems to have a treacherous personality, and I was actually expecting more dirt to be dished out.

I was not expecting the guy to push roids on the general population.

Sounds pretty dangerous; but as someone who currently has the BMI of a Somali pirate, perhaps I should reconsider.

The book even includes a picture of Canseco practicing mixed martial arts.

He can’t box for shit, but he’s quite a bit smarter than you’d think; Juiced is an engaging read, and it’s fun to hear a traitor’s perspective. ( )
