"Whaling and Fishing" offers the reader an authentic glimpse into the life of a sailor, attempting to dispel the romance often attributed to it by exploring both what may be enjoyed and what must be endured. Based on the author own experience as a whaler, this volume is recommended for those with an interest in the maritime history and of whaling in particular, and it would make for a worthy addition to collections of angling literature. Contents include: "Whalemen Wanted!", "A Whaling Shipping Office", "The Man-of-Wars-Man", "The Merchant Seaman", "The Whale-man", "Talk with the Shipper", "I Determine on a Whaling Cruise", "New Bedford", "The Town", "The Wharves", "The Shipping Office", "Prospective Whalemen", "Old Bill", "The Outfit" etc. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with that in mind that we are republishing this volume now in a modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.… (mere)

I liked this book. My copy wasn't really well printed, there must have been inking problems during production, but the writing and the story-telling were particularly good. The descriptions of conditions encountered were very well crafted and I got a good feeling for what Mr. Nordhoff himself had been feeling and experiencing. It was obviously a very important period of his life that he was telling us about. Yes, it's a book about another century than the two I have the pleasure to experience and, yes, it was a different world, but writers like this bring parts of it current for their readers. One of the descriptions that might surprise a lot of today's readers is that which he makes of the Cape Cod area. This book is a treasure. ( )

The cutting and hoisting recommences, and as the whale's body is slowly turned, the head, which is kept stationary by the post, is gradually wrenched off.
