I just finished it. And I'm left with a deep feeling of nostalgia - like I have lost something deep within myself and yet, I'm can't quite remember what it was. Adulthood steals our innocence. We forget what it was to be young. And yet, Peter never changed, never grew old. He also never died and was forgotten. It seems part of me desperately wants to remain just as a child - "gay, innocent, and heartless" - but that requires stasis, never changing, never growing or progressing or even learning. So the other part is grateful for change and growing up. Can I at the same time mourn the loss of childhood and while I celebrate the joy of growth? Can we embrace both or is this an unavoidable ether/or? Peter is a terrible child. Wendy is forced into heteronormative mommyhood. First Peoples are made into racial stereotypes (time context obviously, BUT STILL). Basically, this is all the things I don't like packaged into a "children's book." It seriously lacked Christopher Walken's drunken acting, which added some needed hilarity to the 2014 live production. This book keeps you on your feet from the beginning. Children will enjoy reading about Wendy and Peter's adventures. I love the movie with Jeremy Sumpter 2003 and I love Hook with Robin Williams and I love the idea of the story. So you'd think I'd love the original story but I don't. I struggled with it. -------------------- I need to get a copy of this edition to look at Trina's illustrations ETA: I got it and was not disappointed. I didn't read this as a child and I wasn't overly impressed as an adult. It was oddly boring to me. I thought the crocodile would have a slightly bigger part. The musings of Captain Hook about good form vs bad form were silly and so overtly British. I had no idea that Tink wasn't much of a good fairy since she was a jealous, spiteful little thing. I am happy to have this one under my belt. (
