Nonfiction - Partial Biography

This book is about John Wilkes Booth, what led him to kill Lincoln in Ford Theatre, how he escaped, and what happened to him after. It tells about how the South's loss sent Booth into a devastating frenzy to kill the President and his plan to do it. The book goes into incredible detail about Booth's life and how the war created the killer.

I thought that his book was very good in terms of details and being a credible source of information. This would be a great book to read when discussing and teaching about the Civil War and more specifically, President Lincoln's death.

This book chronicles the 12 it took to find Lincoln's assassin. While this book was clearly intended for youth, I really enjoyed it. The author does a nice job of indicating which parts are speculation. ( )

I read this one on Jody's recommendation, and I'm glad she sent it to me. I learned all sorts of stuff about Lincoln and Booth that I didn't know (yay for learning!), and it was surprisingly suspenseful considering it's common knowledge how things turned out. Also there was mention of brain matter oozing between fingers and blood gushing from knife wounds and things getting set on fire. Carnage and history, two great tastes that taste great together! ( )

This story is true. All the characters are real and were alive during the great manhunt of April 1865. Their words are authentic and come from original sources: letters, manuscripts, trial transcripts, newspapers, government reports, pamphlets, books and other documents. What happened in Washington, D.C., that spring, and in the swamps and rivers, forests and fields of Maryland and Virginia during the next twelve days, is far too incredible to have been made up.So begins this fast-paced thriller that tells the story of the pursuit and capture of John Wilkes Booth and gives a day-by-day account of the wild chase to find this killer and his accomplices.

I like how this book tell you about the real things that happened. What i found interesting was the articles that he put in. Based on James Swanson's bestselling adult book MANHUNT: THE 12-DAY CHASE FOR LINCOLN'S KILLER, this young people's version is an accessible look at the assassination of a president, and shows readers Abraham Lincoln the man, the father, the husband, the friend, and how his death impacted those closest to him.Swanson has degrees in history from the University of Chicago, where he was a student of John Hope Franklin, and in law from the University of California, Los Angeles.
