I thought that this book was pretty good. The plot was kind of loose. It was like the author didn't want to put any fillers in and instead use just the events. However, I liked the overall story and illustrations. The story is about this boy's best friend who catches a baby in a hat. The best friend goes on many adventures and grows up. He comes back to where he caught the baby, and the baby is now a grown woman. He falls in love with the baby and marries her. It was an interesting story, but I just wished there was more detail. ( )

I thought this was a good book! The pages where the whole town is illustrated, or the sailors on the ships, definitely enhance the story and the overall appropriateness of the setting. Overall, the setting appears to be from centuries ago. Also, from the way the characters speak to one another, this also seems appropriate to the story. The characters speak and act appropriately for the time period that this book is supposed to take place. For example, on the page when the crew all are saying, "Eye-eye sir!, Eye-eye sir!" repeatedly, this engaged me! This in fact was a saying that crews of ships would often be heard saying so it was helpful to see a common phrase used in the dialogue. At the end of the book, the sailor ends up falling in love with the, now grown, baby girl. The message that I think this story is trying to get across is that everything happens for a reason. The sailor caught that baby in his hat years prior and then found her once again by chance! Sometimes life/ love is crazy! ( )

A boy cought a baby in his hat. He returns her to the mother. He travels all over the world. Comes back when he is grown up and falls in love with the now older that he caught in his hat many years ago.

Large detailed folkart style pictures tell a life's adventure. A young man actually caught a baby in his hat as he reached out with it when he saw her fall from an upstairs window. He does all sorts of things and ironically one day grows up and marries this same baby. He then as captain of a ship takes her and their own baby on as his crew as the sail the Southern Seas.
