jfoster_sf: Another great book that centers around a museum. This one is about Theo, a girl whose parents are curators. Most of the time her parents get so wrapped up in their work that Theo ends up spending the night in the museum. Her favorite spot? An ancient sarcophagus she keeps handy to protect her from all the evil spirits lurking about the museum at night. Most of the Egyptian items are covered with curses, and Theo is working to remove the curses and protect her parents and the other museum workers from evil. Really fun read!… (mere)

muumi: In The Law of Gravity (aka What Goes Up Must Come Down) Margo Green and her friend Bernie visit the MMA and make sure to search out 'the bed that Claudia slept in, in the movie'. It's quite a suitable literary pilgrimage, because What Goes Up is another delightful book set in Manhattan, with another heroine determined to change her own life.… (mere)

This was a favorite of mine as a child, but I had only faint memories of the actual story. Picked it up for a reread recently and loved it as an adult as well. ( )

A classic in every respect: fantastic for children and great for adults. Konigsburg reminds us of the beauty of art, the joy of secrets and seeking to uncover a mystery. The themes she emphasizes are so important. Learning is cool! Knowledge is worth pursuing and even holding on to even if you're the only one who knows it. We are on of a journey of discovering the world around us and who we are and it's worth fighting for. Recommended to all! ( )

I really enjoyed this one, even though I typically shy away from mysteries. It wasn't really a mystery though; I just thought it was from the description. It's actually the story of Claudia and her little brother Jamie, who run away to the Metropolitan Museum of Art due to the injustices at home. Heh. The books is about growing up, secrets, striving to be unique. And it was so much funnier than I expected. Great read!

Course evaluation:

Personal Response: This was such a fun book that I wish I had read as a child. I tend to avoid mysteries, but wish I hadn’t in this case. It was much funnier than expected as well as quite introspective toward the end.

Evaluation: The plot is fast-paced and builds tension toward the climax of meeting Mrs. Frankweiler. Konigsburg effectively drives the story forward during each scene while focusing on the small details and characters; there is a balance between the plot and characterization. Claudia and Jamie are complex characters who have many realistic traits. They fight like real siblings, have age-appropriate interests and worries, and are consistent in each scene. Readers will relate to Claudia’s complaints of chores and younger siblings, as well as her growth and maturity throughout the book. Konigsburg shows the Kincaids’ maturity in a realistic way through the story, and though some details are dated, readers will respond to the general themes. ( )

It follows two children-12-year-old Claudia Kincaid and her brother Jamie-as they run away from home and hide out in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. The children become involved in researching the past of an angel statue sold to the museum by Mrs. Basil E. ( )
