A fun, quick exciting/rollicking read - in the vein of Dan Brown. A nice break between heavier reading, and interesting info on Arabian peninsula history and science (

Okay, I pushed on and finished it. Not overly impressed, but assuming the writing and editing (!!!) improve as the series progresses, I understand why some people enjoy the series. Not going to slog through book two, but I am pretty sure either #4 or #6 is already in my inherited Kindle library and I might give that one a shot someday. Might.

DNF at 64%. Unabridged audio

After reading a later book in the series, I decided to start at the beginning. I am /so/ glad I didn’t pick this one up first.

I made it over half way through. I kept thinking I could finish. But there are another 5-1/2 hours left.

I didn’t feel any connection with any of the characters. The plot was nicely complex with lots of action scenes. But everything seemed to drag on longer than it needed to.

So, I will move on to the second in this series with a hope that there will be rapid improvements to the level I enjoyed in the first one I read. (

Una noche de tormenta, la restauradora Safia al-Maaz es despertada por una terrible explosión. Minutos después una llamada telefónica le confirma lo peor: la Galería Kensington del Museo Británico, de la que ella es principal responsable, ha sido destruida. La extraña explosión ha tenido su origen en una estatua milenaria, aparentemente normal, pero tras una investigación desvela en su interior un corazón de metal con una inscripción en sabeo, el antiguo idioma de los pobladores de Arabia: Ubar. Ubar es el nombre de la mítica ciudad de las mil columnas, la capital de la reina de Saba, que desapareció bajo las arenas hace miles de años, a causa de su orgullo y opulencia. Safia, acompañada por su amiga Kara Kensington y el explorador y aventurero Omaha Dunn, parte para Omán con intención de resolver el misterio, pero el corazón es sólo el primer eslabón en una cadena de pistas y acertijos que conducen hasta las puertas de Ubar. Para lograrlo deberán actuar con rapidez, ya que pronto descubrirán que no son los únicos interesados en descubrir qué es lo que se esconde bajo las arenas. Se inicia así una carrera despiadada, de la que sólo una de las partes puede salir vencedora.
