"The Design Museum Book of 20th Century Design presents in one volume the most important and influential pieces of design produced in the modern age. This definitive survey features the century-defining designs of such pioneers as Mies van der Rohe, Rem Koolhaas, Gio Ponti, Eileen Gray, Christian Dior, Vivienne Westwood, Saul Bass, Neville Brody, Frank Lloyd Wright, and many more."--BOOK JACKET. "This landmark survey of modern design presents the most desirable objects of the modern age: from the Royalton Hotel to Rietveld, from the Ducati motorcycle to the Concorde, from 1960s film posters to Tupperware, the best of twentieth century design is gathered in this stunningly illustrated book. In thirteen detailed sections - covering a wide range of subjects, from architecture to packaging, fashion to furniture, type to houseware - Catherine McDermott presents over 360 examples of the best, most iconic, and most enduring examples of modern design, while providing historical context for the pieces, celebrating artistic diversity, examining their place in our cultural heritage, and exploring the very essence of great and enduring design."--Jacket.… (mere)

When traveling it's natural to want to buy a souvenir or two, and for me that typically involves books. But rather than having to lug home a coffee table book, it makes more sense to buy smaller editions for easier transport. Such drove my decision to get the "pocket" edition of nearly 400 classics of 20th century design when I visited London and the Design Museum during the Millennium festivities. The book is a decent overview of important buildings, interiors, products, pieces of furniture, clothing, and other things designed last century. It's far from comprehensive, but in the areas where my expertise is lacking the book is a handy reference that also shows how the design of just about everything evolved in the course of 100 years. It's interesting all these years later to see just how much of the architecture in the book I've seen in person (about a third) or how many of the products I now own (not nearly as high a percentage).
