Vintage crafts are suddenly all the rage, none more so than knitting.Vintage knitting patterns from the 1930s, '40s and '50s invoke the timeless chic of that more innocent age, and have become highly collectible in the last few years. But often original patterns don't produce successful results: they can be highly complicated; they use yarns that are no longer available, and the sizes are too small for our larger modern physiques. That's where this book comes in. Lise-Lotte Lystrup presents 21 genuine period designs that have been cleverly updated for the modern knitter. The patterns have been subtly simplified; they use easily sourced modern yarns; and instructions are provided for six different sizes. The result is a delightful book that celebrates vintage style for today.… (mere)

For experienced knitters/sweaters, cardigans and a couple scarves. These patterns, edited and updated for modern sizes and yarn weights, have a lot of promise, though they don't look quite as cute as the vintage illustrations. They employ more textures than I'd care for (I'd say "no thanks" to anything with bobbles all over), but a seasoned knitter would be able to adjust the pattern to fit whatever stitch she prefers. I don't have the right amount of yarn or the patience to try the patterns, but at a glance I'm impressed by the quality of this book. ( )

The patterns are really cool in this book, and the photography is great. HOWEVEr, it's not the most user-friendly knitting pattern book in the world. It's tough to figure out the gauge if you are not going to buy exactly the yarn she suggests, and also there aren't helpful things like a stitch count at the end of each instruction for decreasing (I only realized I was two stitches short of what I should have, after doing about 12 decreasing rows).

There also aren't nice little prequels to each pattern, just a picture and instructions. ( )
