Annis Best finds herself "exiled" to the country after a particularly bad bout of whooping cough, enrolled at the extemely small and rather unconventional Farm School on the Forrester property near Sutton Malherbe. For a London girl who was convinced that a public High School was the only one worth attending, this was a catastrophe! But her friendship with Kitty Forrester, and her growing sense that the Farm School offered a curriculum and range of activities that promoted independent thought and overall excellence, eventually reconciled her to the change.

I enjoyed this story of a young girl who learns that being different isn't so undesirable, although I sense that it is probably atypical in the school story genre, which I have just begun to explore. Annis' growing appreciation for country things, from the beauties of nature to her newfound love of horseback riding, made for pleasant reading. I did find myself a little confused, upon occasion, by the distinctions made between the various types of school. "Public" school means something very different in Britain, than it does in the United States, where it indicates a tax-funded, government-run school (a "state" school in Britain).

From the American perspective, Annis' High School, and the Farm School, would both be considered "private" schools, making the distinctions between them culturally specific. I wasn't always sure what connotations to attach to each of them, although I eventually concluded that the difference had mostly to do with conventionality, or the lack thereof.

Finally, I found myself somewhat uncomfortable with the explanation offered for Ruth Forrester's hostility to Annis. I realize that it reflects the very different perceptions of this particular issue, that would have been current at the time of writing (1938), but the secrecy the Forrester family thought necessary, still struck me as rather creepy.

That discomfort notwithstanding, I enjoyed Exile for Annis, and am eager to read the two sequels in the Farm School series. ( )

Annis Best stared with horrified eyes at her mother, who had strolled to the window and now stood looking out as though the sunshine and the bursting trees were the most interesting things in the world.
