The cool story of volcanoes will intrigue kids and adults alike. Hot melted rock from the middle of our planet forces its way up through cracks in the Earth’s crusts, exploding violently and sometimes unexpectedly in volcanic fury that can terrorize populations for months, even years. Anne Schreiber’s narrative gives readers a little of the science, a little of the history, and a lot of the action. National Geographic photography fires the imagination on dramatic spreads alive with vivid images of lava, ash, molten rock, weird rocks, and steaming seawater.… (mere)

This is a very informative picture book about volcanoes! I love all of the interesting and fun facts they use to teach kids new information. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in volcanoes or geology. ( )

This was a fun read because you never really think to look up or read about how volcanoes work because it's kind of obvious. There is a lot more science behind volcanoes than we think and I think that is what is so awesome about this book. ( )

This is great for ages 7-9, it is very fun and interactive for students. It is not good for a read aloud since there isn't a clear storyline in it, but it would be very informative as a self read

The National Geographic Kids reader the Volcanoes! By Anne Schreiber is a great read about Volcanoes. It shares with the reader all sorts of volcano facts as well as the different types of volcanoes around the world. It really engages the reader and peaks their interest. A few of the things I love about the book format itself are how they introduce the reader to informational features of text. They start the read off with a table of contents, so kids can get an overview of the book and what information will be presented on what page. Then then throughout the book their is subtitles and visual supports (pictures) for the facts and information. There is also definitions of vocabulary words in a box on each page one a new word is introduced. The book also does a great job of taking the information and making connections to the world. This makes the information real and meaningful to the reader. To top it all off, the author also has questions he asks the reader on just about every page. This gets kids thinking and apply the information they are learning. Overall, this book is a great read for an strong 2nd grade reader or a 3rd grader. I like the facts and information presented and it gives a whole picture of the science behind volcanoes. ( )
