According to legend, anyone who wandered into the labyrinth in Ancient Crete never came out again. Some labyrinths may have offered patterns for an erotic spring dance. Those on the floors of Medieval cathedrals represent mathematical perfection–and walking their paths was a symbolic approach to the divine. From ancient Mediterranean coin patterns to the great French cathedral labyrinths to contemporary cornfield mazes, labyrinths and mazes have appeared all over the world, but never have so many been created as in today’s revival, on farms, and in parks, churches, hospitals, and spas across the country. In his charmingly quirky investigation of an image that has inspired countless beautiful patterns and mysterious practices, David Willis McCullough offers an irresistible way to enjoy their enduring appeal.… (mere)

Tons and tons of speculation by historians about labyrinth-related things. Got to the point where I just couldn't swallow one more unfounded speculation.

A good survey-style history of labyrinths and mazes (and yes, the two are different, as the author explains at some length). Okay, but gets a bit repetitive, and I found I wanted some more documentation at various points. ( )

The Unending Mystery treats labyrinths and mazes of all types and times: the Cretan labyrinth, Roman mosaics, cathedral floors, Scandinavian stone circles, English turf labyrinths, hedge mazes, knot gardens, corn mazes -- even lab-mouse mazes. ("Mazes built for laboratory mice...were based...on Hampton Court's [hedge maze]....[T]ests on muscle and brain activity in sleeping laboratory mice suggest that they dream at night about the mazes they run all day. If so, the Hampton Court design may live on in a dream world its first builders never imagined.")

The appendix offers a step-by-step guide in drawing a seven-circuit Cretan labyrinth....so I drew one on graph paper and used it as a cross-stitch pattern. The book is interesting and informative, and makes me want to incorporate labyrinths into more of my crafting projects. ( )
