Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) is probably the most divisive philosopher of the twentieth century. He is considered by some to be greatest charlatan ever to claim the title of philosopher, an apologist for Nazism by others, and an acknowledged leader and central figure to many philosophers. Michael Inwood's lucid introduction steers a clear path through Heidegger's complex language and thought. This short, accessible guide to the existentialist thought of Heidegger focuses on his most important work, Being and Time, and its major themes of existence in the world, inauthenticity, guilt, destiny, truth, and the nature of time. These themes are then reassessed in the light of Heideggers later work, together with the extent of his philosophical importance and influence. For anyone interested in philosophy, theology and literary theory, Heidegger is an invaluable guide to the complex and voluminous thought of a major twentieth-century existentialist philosopher.… (mere)

Not being too familiar with Heidegger's work before reading this, I can't comment as to this book's faithfulness to Heidegger's actual thought, although it seems very well-informed and a comprehensive consideration of all of his work, not only Being & Time. That said, I found this a mostly helpful introduction. It's a little tough going at first, I think because he starts using Heidegger's terms before defining them. But by the end, it's very illuminating, especially when he gets to the discussion of art and poetry. I came away from this book thinking of Heidegger's philosophy as a set of almost spiritual doctrines, a concerted attempt to reconcile immanence with humanity's centrality to itself, and it's easy to see the beginnings of the existentialism that culminated with Sartre and Camus. I thought I was keeping my head above water for the first 100 pages or so (out of 134), though whether I could explain it all to somebody else is another matter. Then I just got overwhelmed trying to keep all the technical vocabulary straight, especially as it most involved weird meanings of everyday words. It did not help that the glossary was based on the German terms while the text used English. ( )

Being unfamiliar with Heidegger's writing, which I'm given to understand is technical and obscure, I'm not able to offer comment regarding Inwood's explication of his thought. That said, I found Inwood's text occasionally illuminating but often unhelpful. Whether or not the lack of clarity is the result of Inwood's language, though, or the difficulty inherent in simplifying Heidegger's thought, is unclear. A moderately useful introduction that probably requires supplementation with related texts. ( )

Heidegger himself is probably clearer about his own ideas and more focused than this introductory text. I recommend just reading one of the many books that were made from Heidegger's lectures. ( )

NBD|Biblion:
