Fantasy. Fiction. Romance. Historical Fiction. HTML:NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Diana Gabaldon weaves a dazzling tale of history, intrigue, and suspense in this first novel featuring one of her most popular characters from the Outlander saga: Lord John Grey.

/> The year is 1757. On a clear morning in mid-June, Lord John Grey emerges from London’s Beefsteak Club, his mind in turmoil. A nobleman and a high-ranking officer in His Majesty’s army, Grey has just witnessed something shocking. But his efforts to avoid a scandal that might destroy his family are interrupted by something still more urgent: The Crown appoints him to investigate the brutal murder of a comrade-in-arms who may have been a traitor. Obliged to pursue two inquiries at once, Major Grey finds himself ensnared in a web of treachery and betrayal that touches every stratum of English society—and threatens all he holds dear.

arrived from camis! Bookcrossed. Story is ok slow build and drawn out dual story lines that play into each other at the end. I wasn't familiar with the main character so it wasn't as easy to get into the novel as it would be fo someone who is up to date on the Voyager Series. That said the characters are well drawn, but sometimes the the plot devices seem contrived as if the author isn't entirely sure how to handle everything somehow.

In the end I'm not sure if my lack of enjoyment of this was from not being up to date with the Voyager series or if the writing style around this character is just not settled enough with the author yet.

Like all the Gabaldon books I’ve started on audio, I ended up reading this as well. It’s wonderful to see Lord John at home and among friends, and the mystery had so many twists I didn’t come close to figuring it out. On to the next book, and I hope the third is out soon! ( )

Not a bookclub book, but it was good to read in between all the other Outlander series books. ( )
