The conception of this project stems from the way lessons are
scheduled at Ames Senior High School in Ames, Iowa where I am presently
employed. Each of the 275 students in the program receives a one period
lesson (approximately 43 minutes) each week. In addition, they rehearse daily
with a large ensemble. Students' lessons are scheduled during one of their
free periods which results in groups of varying instruments, ability level, and
age. In addition, lesson group size is inconsistent (ranging from 1 to 20
students). Pulling students out of other classes for lessons is not possible
because of the academic demands of our school and the large number of
students who take course work at a nearby university. It is felt that the
personal attention to each student in this lesson situation, although not ideal,
is much better than no lesson at all.

Meeting the needs of these varied lesson groups demands a creative
approach. It has been found that our student body responds very well to
independent, self-paced instruction. The challenge is to design lessons that
help the student teach themselves, use the teacher as a resource, and that
hold the student accountable for work. One of our goals is to help the student
learn to practice more effectively.
The Ames Community School District Music Curriculum prescribes
the use of the Rubank Advanced Method for freshman and sophomore band
students. This book addresses several areas: scale studies, articulation
studies, musical ornaments, solos, as well as musical interpretation duets.
This mixed nature of our lesson groups however has, in the past, led to a
poor utilization of the musical interpretation duet section of the book.
Without a duet partner, the student can only partially benefit from the
concepts presented in this section. The goal of this project is to develop
instructional supplements to help students develop on their own more
effectively.
