The science behind hurricanes and wind patterns are complicated (in my opinion), so I feel like this book would be good to read in chunks. If all of it was read in one sitting, the students might not get everything out of it. I felt like there was a lot of information that was very useful but could be split up. I really liked the illustrations. I love watercolor, so having that in an information book was really cool. I'm used to seeing photographs in information books but I like the incorporation of watercolor. ( )

It tells the story of a hurricane from the very beginning process through the destruction if causes while giving info to stay safe.

The book, "Hurricane Watch" is about learning everything about a hurricane. How it forms, where, why, when it will land, etc. The book has little charts to show the different categories and the way hurricanes form. This book is very nice for informing children. Often times children don't really know what a hurricane is, but this book says it all in a safe and knowledgeable way. Parents can read this to their child or teachers can read this during hurricane season. It could help children be more prepared and less scared by reading this book. ( )

With the devastation brought about by recent hurricanes, this is the perfect time to read (or reread) this book. It's packed with information but presented in a way that will reassure children, not scare them. For instance, if there's a hurricane watch, children can help by bringing in their bikes so they won't blow away. Preparing is key and giving children something concrete to do works magic in keeping them calm. There are also science experiments to try so they can learn even more about hurricanes. I recommend it for both school and home, elementary grades. ( )

Overall: This book is all about hurricanes. Topics include how hurricanes are formed, how they are measured/tracked, how to be prepared during a hurricane, and how the path of a hurricane transforms during its route. It also had fun additional facts on a few pages and contains a page detailing specific activities to learn more.

Uses/strategies:
-This book could be used to show the purpose of diagrams and how they enhance the learning. Without diagrams, for example, about how hurricanes
are formed, it would be harder to visualize the process.
-This book could also be used to teach the purpose of a glossary. All the bolded words are included in the glossary and provide a quick reference to
information just read.

Possible science topics:
-weather/natural disasters/hurricanes

Informational text features:
-bolded words
-glossary
-diagrams/charts
-"Did You Know" additional information
