Biography & Autobiography. Nonfiction. HTML:

Between the ages of 15 and 30 Beatrix Potter kept a secret diary written in code. When the code was cracked by Leslie Linder more than 20 years after her death, the diary revealed a remarkable picture of upper middle-class life in late Victorian Britain. The original diaries run to over 200,000 words so for this edition Glen Cavaliero has made a careful selection of complete entries and excerpts which provide an illuminating insight into the personality and inspiration of one of the world's best loved children's authors.

Judging by the array of covers, there is more than one "work" in the LT sense lumped together under one title. My comments apply to the lavishly illustrated edition full of fold-outs and reproductions of ephemera: "A work of fiction based upon Beatrix Potter's letters and journals". It is a beautiful book, but extremely fragile. The decorative paper used on the spine is susceptible to tearing and the colour wears off before the books make it onto the bookstore shelves. I special-ordered it from a bookstore and had to wait for a second copy to come in, because the first arrived with the binding torn. Even the second looks slightly worn. Still a joy to read though and I am very glad I bought it. ( )

This lavish, illustrated journal describes Beatrix Potter’s life as a young woman in Victorian England as she struggles to achieve independence and to find artistic success and romantic love. Using witty, observant commentary taken from Beatrix’s own diaries, the journal features a wealth of watercolor paintings, sketches, photographs, letters and period memorabilia to recreate the world in which she lived.
