This book is about Winnie Foster and her adventures with the Tuck family. Winnie doesn't like how strict and confining her family are so she decides to run away into the woods near her home. She finds a boy in the woods, Jesse Tuck, drinking from a spring by a tree. Jesse refuses to let Winnie drink water from the spring and won't tell her why, then when his mom and brother arrive they take Winnie with them back to their house. There Winnies learns the family's secret and what makes the water at the spring so dangerous, but a man who wants to take advantage of the spring causes some problems. Eventually the Tucks escape Treegap and come back years later to find out what happened to Winnie and the spring. This book challenges readers to look at their life and what they want to do with it. Do they want to live forever or do they want to face their own mortality? This is a great book to get young readers to think about where they want their life to go and would be a great addition to any classroom. ( )

Beautifully haunting youth literature that gets the reader to ask “would I want to live forever?” This book is a modern day classic that became a popular movie adaptation. Many people who saw the movie were then drawn to the book (and vice versa), however we can all agree that the book is ALWAYS better than the movie. This book is a coming of age story of a young girl who discovers a fountain of youth on her property and the mysterious family who never grows older. Now that she knows the secret Winnie must question her own mortality and decide if she will keep their secret and if she wants to join them on their never-ending journey through time. ( )

This is a beautiful, magical tale and one of my favourite books. ( )

I am very on the fence about this - creative fantasy, but the story could have gone so many different ways that might have been fuller. ( )

I read it back in middle school. For some reason I thought it was going to be good, but I couldn't get into it. ( )

The first week of August hangs at the very top of the summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning.

Winnie woke early the next morning. The sun was only just opening its own eye on the eastern horizon and the cottage was full of silence. But she realized that sometime during the night her had made up her mind: she would not runaway today. 'Where would I go anyway?'....But in another part of her head...she knew there was another sort of reason for staying at home: she was afraid of going away alone.
