I adore Chief Inspector Gamache! Following him through an investigation made me feel more observant of human behavior. His keen skills of observation contrast with another investigator he tries to teach as his team examines clues in a charming small town where people believe they know each other’s secrets.
Now I am hooked and grateful this is a series. ( )

What an excellent read. With all the twists and turns and challenges this author provides, this is a book to devour if you love a good mystery. ( )

What an excellent book! With so many mysteries, the murder is just a way to introduce the mystery, the body just a prop, but Penny gives life to all of her characters and makes their mourning central to the story. I intended to save this for my afternoon walk but listened all this morning instead. Guess I'll have to get the next book in the series for my walk. ( )

I had seen this series mentioned a number of times, but a lot of reviews advised it was a "cozy mystery" which I'm not always a fan of.
I would dispute that this was a cozy mystery. This is more of a police procedural with a physiological bent about why people do and react as they do.
I loved the fact that for a change the main detective was a happily married, balanced individual and that it focused more on the mystery.
Whilst some of the characters in Three Pines could have been a little more shaded, for a debut novel I thought this was good.
I'm definitely going to continue with the series ( )
