Simple stories, engaging activities. This book starts with a chapter relating Native American myths to science, followed by a chapter advising how to best use the book. Each of the subsequent chapters, covering broad topics, contains 1-6 tribal stories followed by a summary of relevant science, and 1 or more learning activities for ages 5-8 and 9-12. Tribes represent many parts of the American continent, from Eastern Woodlands to Southwest Drylands, from the Arctic to Middle America The only direction missing in the SE tribes. Topics covered are: Creation, Celebration Thanksgiving & Stewardship, Flowers and Fruit Seeds and Spores, Survival, and Healing Our Relations. There is an index to the activities by subject, a general index, a reference to other versions of the stories, and a glossary with pronunciation guide.
A separate teacher's guide was not reviewed.

TRAIL
footfalls through crystal autumn air
over brown earth loam
broken rock
and duff leaf litter

dancing with sunlit tree shadow veins
the lifeblood of sun journeys

path leading back to
hillfarm hayfield
logging road
moccasin feet of a life
connected to Earth and Sky

crossing rock walls and fire pits
built by those who have long since
closed the circle of life

path over soil of
flesh and bone
fur and feather
leaf and twig

I try to walk a good trail
treading lightly
rooting deeply

until I once again become
leaf and limb
reaching to the sky
--Michael J. Caduto
