This study examines the content and development of police imagery of the urban environment. Using St. John's, Newfoundland as a specific case, the author explores how the police interpret the physical and social aspects of this Canadian city, how they perceive patterns of crime, how their urban images evolve, and what trends in this community's evolution they identify as significant for their own organization. The analysis of police urban imagery and its implications has been a neglected area in both police studies and in environmental perception research. This study also contri- butes, more generally, to an understanding of the symbolic-cultural dimension of urban communities. No library descriptions found. |
