From the Not Just Proms & Parties high-low series for reluctant teen readers and ESL students, which features quick reads, dynamic, character-driven plots, and positive messages for young women. In the fifth installment of this popular series, we meet Emily. She has a mind of her own, a flair for defying her mother, and can't resist getting a tattoo or dating Jeremy, a guy with a bad reputation, especially because she is forbidden to do both. When her grandmother asks her to house-sit, Emily jumps at the chance to throw a party, and makes sure to invite her new boyfriend's buddies. By the end of the night, her grandmother's jewelry is missing, and all fingers point to Jeremy. Determined to clear his name, Emily starts digging to uncover the thief's identity, and in the process learns that her brooding boyfriend has more than his share of problems. Add to this the fact that Emily's parents are in the middle of a difficult separation, and that her brother has a gambling problem, and Emily realizes she needs to stop causing trouble and start helping the people around her. Emily is a teen rebel. She's one of those girls who gets a tattoo against her mother's wishes and just can't stop from dating a guy with a bad reputation.
When her grandma offers her a chance to house-sit, Emily jumps at the opportunity. What better place is there to throw a party?
But she begins to wonder if she can keep up with all the intensity that comes with her boyfriend. When there's a disaster at the party and secrets begin to come undone, Emily's life starts to change.
EMILY'S REBELLION, which is one of the many books in the NOT JUST PROMS & PARTIES series, is an appealing and light read. Emily is an interesting character, one with whom I'm sure many teens will be able to relate. While I'm not exactly into partying, I could relate to almost all of the situations that came up.
I'd definitely recommend this and I certainly hope to get my hands on the other books in the series. ( )
