He is a brilliant maths professor with a peculiar problem - ever since a traumatic head injury seventeen years ago, he has lived with only eighty minutes of short-term memory. She is a sensitive but astute young housekeeper who is entrusted to take care of him. Each morning, as the Professor and the Housekeeper are reintroduced to one another, a strange, beautiful relationship blossoms between them. The Professor may not remember what he had for breakfast, but his mind is still alive with elegant equations from the past. He devises clever maths riddles - based on her shoe size or her birthday - and the numbers reveal a sheltering and poetic world to both the Housekeeper and her ten-year-old son. With each new equation, the three lost souls forge an affection more mysterious than imaginary numbers, and a bond that runs deeper than memory.… (mere)

A sleeper. Ogawa has woven a heartwarming story around a math professor's love of numbers and number theory, whose life has been forever altered by an automobile accident that restricts his short-term memory to just eighty minutes. He has gone through eight housekeepers when the (unnamed) Housekeeper becomes #9. She quickly adjusts to his ailment, including having to introduce herself every day. The Professor is very interested in passing along his math passion, and perhaps somewhat incongruently, children. He demands that the Housekeeper's 10-year-old son, nicknamed "Root" by the Professor because the shape of his hair and head remind the Professor of the square root symbol. They share a passion for baseball, and a local Japanese team. The friendship that grows between the three is very sweet and their shared moments precious.

P.S. This one sat on my TBR pile for way too long. ( )

It has been a long time since a book has touched me as deeply as this one. The truth is that I bought it to give to my daughter for Christmas. We recently had a discussion about “memory” and she is also intrigued by mathematics, so when I read the summary about this book, I had to buy it for her. But when the package arrived in the mail, I started browsing it… and the rest of the afternoon I could not let it go.
My daughter is probably going to read this post, so I need to reassure her that she is getting another title already ordered. I am sure that she would not mind much if she got a book I had already dog eared (we both do that to books), but I want to keep this one with me to re-read some time.
The “Constant Reader” group is going to discuss it in a couple of months – this is where I first read about it, and I am looking forward to discussing it with them.
I know I talked a lot and didn’t really give it a proper review, but it is one of those books that no review will do justice. So, for what matters, I loved it and highly recommend it!

Is this a thin human story covering a corpus of mathematics, or are mathematics the truly unique human achievement among our common stories. ( )

Beautiful writing that seems effortless, although I know it's not. So much math and baseball. The memory issue made me think of the movie Memento throughout. Because of that, I kept waiting for something horrible to happen, but this is a peaceful story. Really, the horrible thing had happened already – the accident that led to the Professor losing his short-term memory. ( )

Den mycket uppskattade japanska författaren Yoko Ogawa introduceras på svenska med en riktig hjärteknipare. Annat brukar det sällan bli när gamla, sjuka gubbar sammanförs med barn.

The narrator in Ogawa's mysterious, suspenseful, and radiant fable, the youngest housekeeper at the agency, knows that her new client will be a challenge: nine housekeepers have already been fired. But when she meets the Professor in his small cottage, she is intrigued instead of wary. A brilliant mathematician, he lives a surreal life. The elderly Professor can't remember anything after 1975. He can absorb new information and new experiences for 80 minutes at a stretch, then it is erased, and he has to start over. Quiet and kind, his jacket festooned with scraps of paper on which he writes notes to remind himself of what he always forgets, he spends his puzzling days solving highly advanced math problems and winning national contests. At long last, he has the perfect companions. The smart and resourceful housekeeper, the single mother of a baseball-crazy 10-year-old boy the Professor adores, falls under the spell of the beautiful mathematical phenomena the Professor elucidates, as will the reader, and the three create an indivisible formula for love

No matter how much time passed, I was always the young woman who made painfully slow progress with numbers, and my son would always be the boy who simply appeared, and was embraced.
I'm not sure why I became so absorbed in a child's math problem with no practical value. At first, I was conscious of wanting to please the Professor, but gradually that feeling faded and I realized it had become a battle between the problem and me. . . . At first, it was just a small distraction, but it quickly became an obsession. Only a few people know the mystery concealed in this formula, and the rest of us go to our graves without even suspecting there is a secret to be revealed.
But those things aren't the goal of mathematics. The only goal is to discover the truth. The Professor always said the word truth in the same tone as the word mathematics.
After all these years, I'm still at a loss for words to describe how purely the Professor loved children – except to say that it was as unchangeable and true as Euler's formula itself.
He treated Root exactly as he treated prime numbers. For him, primes were the base on which all other natural numbers relied; and children were the foundation of everything worthwhile in the adult world.
