In my opinion this is a great book for children to read when transitioning into reading chapter books. The first reason I liked this book was because of the descriptive and clever language used throughout. A great example of this is at the beginning of the story when, "Mrs. Green says that we're going to have a Halloween party at school. Next Fright-day, we all have to come to class in costumes. Then we'll all vote and pick the best one." You can see that in the second sentence of the quote, the language used is very clever; fright-day instead of Friday. The next thing that I like, are the illustrations used throughout the book. The style of the illustrations are somewhat like comic strips, but in a black and white sketchy tone. The images certainly add to the written text, giving the reader an idea of how each of Hubie's (the main character) friends look and dress for the costume party. In addition, the illustrations add to the readers thinking, having pictures of skulls and asking the reader to "circle the dog skull." The last thing that I liked about this book was the conflict from the plot of the story. Everyone knew what they were going to dress up as for the costume party except for Hubie who was worried he would not have a costume. His mom helped him by telling him, "'When I was a little girl, we didn't have much money either," she smiles while putting on the crown. "So I just made my own costumes, like this princess costume."' Here, you can see how Hubie's mom helps him find a way to make a costume without having to spend money, solving his problems. All in all I think that the 'big idea' of this story is to teach kids that they can use the things around them to help them. Hubie used cardboard and a hanger to make his costume which won the class contest. All it takes is a little imagination and you can make it a long way. ( )

This was a pretty good Children's book. it's a story about our hero Hubie and his dilemma that every kid experiences every Halloween. What to be for Halloween? Hubie's challenge is a little more intense however as it has become a school project that will be judged.

Hubie has no ideas. And what's worse, it seems that all of his friends have their act together. And the even bigger problem? Hubie does not have the money to solve his problem. So it's Mom to the rescue.

Now, what I like about this book is that unlike regular parents who give their child the answer and try to solve the problem for them, Mom just sets Hubie on the path of Creativity. She gives him ideas and encourages Hubie to solve his problem with the tools he already has. The lesson learned here? One is only limited by their limits of their own creativity.

The book is a chapter book, albeit very small chapters but it gives the young reader the sense that they can read chapter books and this is big. The pictures are well proportioned with the text and the text itself is a nice sizeable font.

I recommend this book for any young reader. It reads well and there is thought to the story it brings. ( )
