Excellent book! Loved reading it! ( )

This book started out so promisingly. I enjoyed seeing the world through the eyes of a child who absorbed all and accepted all knowledge and spirituality he came into contact with.

And then came the boat. It became like watching an episode of one of those unbearable survivor TV shows where the presenter explains to you in great detail how to drink your own pee should the occasion call for it.

Without giving too much away, the whole plot is predictable and the attempt to withhold very obvious information, giving it out drop by drop as if it were a revelation, is awkwardly and laboriously done.

This book just goes on and on. It would have made an excellent short story. There are some very nice ideas in it, not only are they few and far between, but they are dealt out with all the subtlety of a flaming bag of poo on your doorstep.

A 16 year old boy is stranded on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger.

A coworker at an old job gave me this book when she finished reading it because she thought I'd like it. I put off reading it for almost ten years and decided to get back into reading with this.

She was not wrong.

The idea I feel is, and I abide by this through friendship, is I do no care how truthful the stories you say are in the end so long as they do yourself or I a good service. And that's what this story ultimately tries to call into question: does it matter if the tiger is actually there or is it better to have the survivors fighting another? What better does it do Pi: his mom dying on the boat with the rest of the family, or being murdered by a cook? And which would you rather believe?

As for the whole religious aspect, I myself am not religious (I grew up in an atheist household, but was curious and went to a catholic college for a year). But I think Pi has a point that, if choosing to believe in God, what's it to follow a few faiths with a few different stories of their own, so long as it does him a good?

Ultimately, this story did not make me believe in God, but in good books and wondrous stories ( )

I'm not entirely sure what to make of this book, in part because I'm not sure which is "the better story." I was captivated by Pi's story of his life in India. I was intrigued by the glimpses we got of his life afterward in Canada. I was fascinated by the story of the tiger and the lifeboat. But I was also somewhat disappointed that we didn't get to hear more of the other story, without the animals, because I suspect it might have made the better story after all. I don't find the analogy between God and "the better story" to be very convincing. An area that I thought would have been ripe for more exploration was Pi's multi-theological position -- a refusal to accept one religion's story as "better." ( )

The story is engaging and the characters attractively zany. Piscine Molitor Patel (named after a family friend's favourite French swimming pool) grows up in Pondicherry, a French-speaking part of India, where his father runs the local zoo. Pi, Hindu-born, has a talent for faith and sees nothing wrong with being converted both to Islam and to Christianity. Pi and his brother understand animals intimately, but their father impresses on them the dangers of anthropomorphism: invade an animal's territory, and you will quickly find that nearly every creature is dangerous

Granted, it may not qualify as ''a story that will make you believe in God,'' as one character describes it. But it could renew your faith in the ability of novelists to invest even the most outrageous scenario with plausible life -- although sticklers for literal realism, poor souls, will find much to carp at.

The reason death sticks so closely to life isn't biological necessity — it's envy. Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what it can. But life leaps over oblivion lightly, losing only a thing or two of no importance, and gloom is but the passing shadow of a cloud.
Evil in the open is but evil from within that has been let out. The main battlefield for good is not the open ground of the public arena but the small clearing of each heart.
I know what you want. You want a story that won't surprise you. That will confirm what you already know. That won't make you see higher or further or differently. You want a flat story. An immobile story. You want dry, yeastless factuality.
Animals in the wild lead lives of compulsion and necessity within an unforgiving social hierarchy in an environment where the supply of fear is high and the supply of food is low and where territory must constantly be defended and parasites forever endured.
If you take two steps toward God, God runs toward you
