from Amazon: A well crafted poem is an effective inducement
By Midwest Book Review on April 3, 2008
Format: Hardcover
A well crafted poem is an effective inducement for parents and teachers seeking to interest children in reading as a personal pastime. Profusely illustrated throughout with the color photography of Ken Robbins, "Keepers: Treasure-Hunt Poems" by John Frank is a collection of thirty poems that are specifically and successfully intended to interest young readers. The poems are thematically organized into five major sections according to where childhood treasures are to be found: At the Beach; In the Attic; In the Mountain and Desert; At the Flea Market; Beneath the Ground. A delightful compendium of superbly crafted, thoroughly 'kid friendly' verse, "Keepers" would make a popular and welcome addition to personal, school, and community library poetry collections for young readers (and not-so-young readers who are still young at heart!). 'Comic Book': Good ol' Clark Kent,/That mild-mannered reporter,/on sale at a swap meet,/a buck and a quarter.//Not bad for a comic/in decent condition--/I wish, thought, that it were/a mint first-edition.

Frank, John. (2008) Keepers: Treasure-Hunt Poems (Robbins, K. Illus.). New York: Roaring Book Press.

Keepers: Treasure-Hunt Poems is a collection of poems that focuses on the small things that one might find and keep because of the uniqueness of the item. The book is broken into five different sections: At the beach, in the attic, in the mountains and desert, at the flea market, beneath the ground. Each section contains items one might find there. For example, "At the flea market" has poems that focus on stamps, a comic book, and costume jewelry.

I was not impressed with this book because I found it a little boring. Originally I was intrigued because of the title and the concept of the book. I was hoping that the poems would take me on an adventure to find these secret treasures, but instead there are short poems that describe the items. The problem is - what if the item is not a "treasure" to the reader? Especially to younger readers - do they really have an interest in a trunk of clothes? ( )

This collection of poems is a little more mature, the poems describe treasures from the beach to the flea market accompanied by a smattering of photographs of the items. Simple but refreshing.
