Fiction. Mystery. Suspense. HTML:

Forget about Grisham, Turow, and all those other scribbling ex-lawyers. The best writer of legal mysteries working today is Kate Wilhelm of Eugene, Oregon.

When he was a kid, Teddy Wendover had an accident that left him stunted at the mental age of eight. Physically, he's six-foot-two and twenty-eight years old, but he acts and thinks just like a little boy. Could this big little boy be a killer?

Someone has murdered one of Oregon's congressmen, and it doesn't seem to be a coincidence that this politician led the field trip during which Teddy's accident occurred almost twenty years ago. Nor does it seem to be coincidental that the killer left rocks strewn about the murder site, rocks just like the ones Teddy plays with. And the only thing that's certain is that the person who cast the first of these stones is not without sin.

Malice Prepense is the most complicated and most engrossing case yet for Barbara Holloway, the dynamic star of Death Qualified and The Best Defense.

Very good, courtroom story. Oregon Senator murdered for gold.

Barbara Holloway, defense attorney, is persuaded by her father/partner to defend a man who is accused of murdering a senator with whom his wife was having an affair.

The mystery involves 2 other murders which the prosecution does want connected, a judge who is partial to the prosecution, and witness who has a history that the prosecution wants to exploit.

Tremendous mystery, great writing, excellent characters. ( )

Barbara Holloway, the defense attorney in Wilhelm's wonderful series, is really beginning to hit her stride in this episode (it's the third in the series) as she builds a defense for the accused, the father of a severely retarded child, and whose wife had an affair with the murdered congressman.

There is a marvelous cast of characters, a polyester clad investigator, a bubbly young attorney helping Barbara, Frank Holloway- Barbara's widowed father- the senior semi-retired partner in the firm, and a wonderful cook and gardener.

To make it all really interesting, the case is being presided over by a judge who has a real prejudice against the defense, and who keeps restricting Barbara's ability to present information she feels is important.

Finally there's a love interest--the mine inspector whom she hired to get some more detail on what the deceased congressman might have been investigating. It's a dynamite story, twists, turns, ups, downs. I thought I had it solved twice, and was wrong both times. This series is a great one, and I hope that the next ones continue to be as good as the earlier ones. ( )
