This is a nonfiction book about magnets. It gives many examples of magnets in use in the real world, while also explaining how magnets work and addressing misconceptions and confusions students may have about magnets.
This is a pretty good book. It's straightforward and gives really good examples of magnets that students might see around them but not recognize as magnets. it has a glossary of definitions and tells students exactly how magnets work in a simultaneously kid-friendly and scientifically accurate way.
I would use this as a supplementary tool in a lesson on magnets. I would first let students explore with magnets around the classroom and then after the inquiry, read this with students to guide them to the science content. I would use this with younger grades. ( )

Schuh describes magnetism. Magnetism is what makes magnets stick to other magnets or metals. Some metals stick to magnets and some do not. In other words, the force of magnetism does not work on all metals. All magnets have a North Pole and a South Pole. Opposites poles attract and like poles repel. Earth is a big magnet. There is a magnet inside of a compass (it is the needle that points to the north magnetic pole).

I liked the book because it introduces magnetism in a kid-friendly way.

Ask students if they can think of other materials made of iron or steel. Show students that those materials are magnetic. Ask students if they can think of other materials that might not be magnetic. Test the materials. Tell students that the force around the magnet is called the magnetic field.

Students should be able to answer questions about the key details in a text. After I read about magnetism, I will ask students questions: What is magnetism? What metals are magnetic? What metals are non-magnetic? After I read about magnetic poles, I will ask students questions: What are the names of the poles that every magnet has? What happens when you put 2 magnets together that have the same pole? What happens when you put 2 magnets together that have opposite poles? What else is magnetic? ( )
