Ukraine is territorially the second largest country in Europe. Through border shifts, name changes, and domination by a series of foreign powers, the history of Ukraine is long and complex. It is also a subject of growing interest in North America, where over the past two decades a number of universities and secondary school systems have established programs in Ukrainian studies. This atlas follows chronologically developments in Ukraine from earliest times to the present. The terms Ukraine and Ukrainian lands refer in these maps to contiguous lands where Ukrainians live within and beyond the present-day Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Each map is accompanied by a brief commentary describing the events that occurred during the period depicted. The emphasis is on political and administrative changes, but geographic, military, and cultural developments are indicated as well. Together the maps and commentaries present a concise visual record of the Ukrainian homeland. - Dust jacket.… (mere)
