Stupid things Brian does in this book
-throws up after eating poisonous berries and then immediately eats more
-kicks a porcupine and acts surprised when he gets spiked
-eats an egg without cooking it when there’s a whole ass fire right next to him
-make that 6 raw eggs
-then tries to eat the shells whole
-throws sand at a skunk and gets got

i read this in 5th grade and decided to revisit it. there are some real nice passages just abt observing nature but for the most part this book was really uninspired. in 5th grade i made a film adaptation of this and we changed a lot and honestly it was much better. for starts, brian is in the woods in the first place because he got run out of town for drinking too much then he eats some sticks and kills a bear and then finds these kids living in a cave and they say "we;ve been here for the past 100 years" and then someone comes out of the sky and kills them all ( )

The classic survival story of Brian, who finds himself stranded in the wilderness with nothing but a hatchet. Didn’t enjoy it as much this time around as I remember liking it as a kid. Reading to see if it would be suitable as a year 9 text. ( )

I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. Unfortunately, there is still always a risk of slight spoilers despite my best efforts. If you feel something in my review is a spoiler please let me know. Thank you.

Ok, so I just basically devoured this book. I know this is a favorite book for teachers to require kids to read. But I see why. This book is about an amazing 13-year-old boy who used his brain and logic as well as his resourcefulness to overcome problems and survive in a situation where most adults would meet their ends. I never had the pleasure of reading this book in school but I am glad I finally had the chance to read it now. It is easy to see how this book became a classic.

Brian is such a smart and resourceful boy. He uses problem-solving skills to accomplish great things and even when things fall apart, he gets back up and never lets anything keep him down. Some of the things that he went through and managed to force himself into left me shivering and shouting "Uh ah. No way." It did have one line that had me laughing out loud. It was an unexpectedly funny moment.

With 5 books in the series, I doubt they will be as good as this one, but I'm willing to give them a shot. I sometimes have a hard time with classics as I don't get a lot of symbolism and such that your suppose to see in them. But this one I enjoyed very much. ( )

(I'm going to try to keep this as vague as possible since it is a short novel)

This novel follows 13-year old Brian as he travels to visit his father.

Brian is forced to survive on his own in the Canadian wilderness for the majority of this novel.

He has to learn how to help himself with very few supplies; he has a hatchet his mother gave him and some others from his transportation vehicle but must get everything else from nature.

This story includes themes of marriage, divorce, survival, despair, maturity, and growth

I highly recommend this novel for readers as young as 6th grade.

**All thoughts and opinions are my own. I read this book as an elementary student myself and again as a teacher for 6th-grade students.** ( )

Hatchet takes you on Brian Robeson's journey to attempt to survive alone in the wilderness. Brian is a 13-years-old boy with divorced parents who ends up being in a plane crash that leaves him stranded in the Canadian wilderness. Hatchet takes the reader through the many trials Brian has to go through to try to stay alive. This book has a great storyline and would interest anyone who enjoys primitive things and survival. I first read this novel when I was in 6th grade and still remember how it drew me in. Hatchet is filled with vivid imagery and allows you to put yourself in Brian's shoes. The plot is packed with adventure and suspense. It excited me so much that I finished the entire novel in only two days. I want my future students to experience this novel, not only for the adventure, but because of the deeper meaning the novel provides. There is a lot of symbolism scattered throughout the novel that I desire to dissect with my future students. ( )

Brian Robeson stared out the window of the small plane at the endless green northern wilderness below.

He could not play the game without hope; could not play the game without a dream. They had taken it all away from him now, they had turned away from him and there was nothing for him now. The plane gone, his family gone, all of it gone. They would not come. He was alone and there was nothing for him.
In measured time, forty-seven days had passed since the crash. Forty-two days, he thought, since he had died and had been born as the new Brian.
Many times he thought he would not make it.
