This is another story in a series about Clifford by Norman Bridwell. In this fiction picture book, Clifford goes to visit his family. He finds out where they live, and what makes them happy where they live. He finds that even though he doesn't live with his brothers, sisters, mom, and dad, that they are all happy because they each have people that need them in their life, like he needs Emily.

Everyone's favorite Big Red Dog, Clifford, takes a trip with Emily Elizabeth (Emilia Isabel) to visit his family. Clifford has a big family, but he is a big dog, so it is no surprise that his family each has a big job! His sister is a seeing-eye dog, and his brother is a firedog. His other sister is a sheepdog in the country, and his father herds children. Clifford is so proud of his family! A great book that introduces children to different working-dog jobs in the city and the country.

For 35 years my attitude toward Clifford was one of benign indifference, but now that I'm actually reading his books that is changing fast. This is where we meet his family, who are not big and red but each of whom is a special dogooder* and overachiever in his or her own way: seeing eye dog, fire dog, sheepdog, &c. It's kind of a more sanctimonious Franny & Zooey or Royal Tenenbaums of the dog world, and you're left with the impression that in the same way as only arty upper middle class eccentrics from New York deserve to be the centres of their own stories, all those dogs in the dog pound or living mangy and forgotten under the bridge deserve to be there, man.

*that's "do-gooder," not "dog-ooder") ( )
