Nancy and her friends have yet again accompanied her father to a country resort while he works on a case. The story opens with the cousins encouraging Nancy to sign up for the upcoming golf tournament the hotel is hosting. Nancy demurs, though her score is a princely 97! It would have been better, but Nancy loses a ball in the woods and her caddy is reluctant to help her find it. When pressed, the boy admits that no caddys will enter the woods because of the haunted bridge! Nancy scoffs, but moves on with her game and still ultimately qualifies.

A complication to the tournament arises when Nancy injures her hand when she falls off a porch after backing away from the advances of a unscrupulous braggart. He also seems like new money, you understand.

Nancy's father inevitably must enlist Nancy's help with his case - did lawyers really ever do this kind of research? - and she meets a mysterious young woman with a past. Is there any connection between the woman's burned estate and the haunted bridge? Who's screams echo through the woods at night? Can Nancy win the tournament with a sprained hand?

There was a lot to like in this mystery, I'm not sure what they had to revise out of this one except for the class snobbery of Nancy, Bess, and George. Private menageries, if 'Tiger King' has taught us anything, are hardly a thing of the past either. 'The Haunted Bridge's failing for me was Nancy's relentless perfection. I think she should be allowed to sit down and put her feet up every once and a while. We also got the first hint of jealousy from Ned Nickerson, which was interesting,

The mystery was a bit thin, and there was a very annoying man who dominated too much of the book. Also, I'm amused by all the activities and sports that Nancy is just naturally gifted at. I mean, good for her... ( )

I absolutely loved Nancy Drew growing up. This was a series I latched on to for dear life and never let go. Anytime my mom and I would go to antique stores, we'd peruse the Nancy Drews and add them to the collection (oftentimes my mom had to make deals with me on how many I could buy). So, while I don't remember the exact details of each and every one, the entire series was amazing and really fed my love for reading (especially novels full of suspense and mystery). Thank you, Carolyn Keene, for giving us an intelligent female character to fall in love with in Nancy Drew! ( )

#15 Mr. Drew is on the trail of an international ring of jewel thieves and asks Nancy to assist him. The trail leads to a summer resort area. Before Nancy has a chance to start work on her father’s case, a golf caddy tells her a frightening tale--in the dense woods nearby is an old wooden footbridge guarded by a ghost! Intrigued by the caddy’s story, Nancy decides to investigate. Several riddles confront the young detective as she attempts to solve the mystery of the haunted bridge and track down a woman suspected of being a key member of the gang of jewel thieves. ( )
