Simplistic, quick read. ( )

Two former high school classmates, used to run in different circles, one being an athlete and the other a nerd, cross paths again years later when they come back to teach in the same high school they attended as students.
The group dynamics that kept them from interacting with each other as students seem to still apply now that they’re teachers. At least until they’re forced to spend time together when Brandon, the biology teacher, is assigned to the Jake’s baseball team as an assistant coach.

I liked the setting and the story, the way Jake and Brandon readjust their preconceived ideas about each other and find out that they’ve more in common than they thought.
I liked that there wasn’t any drama and Jake was, against all predictions, ready to demonstrate his feelings and affection to Brandon.

The writing is what I had problems with.
The frequent and sudden shifts in POV, without so much as a blank line in between, were often confusing.
The MCs were referred to as “the science/biology teacher” and “the coach” even in situations that had nothing to do with their jobs.
They sounded like teenagers sometimes and, while it was cute and funny at the beginning, when they got together their inner (and not inner) dialogue was at times sappy and frankly ridiculous, coming from grown men.

I also didn’t like that important things, like Jake’s problems with physical pain and the pills, were barely addressed and dismissed, already “resolved” or dropped in a page or two.
Sometimes the reader has no idea that something is going on (Brandon’s burn out, for example), until one of the MCs mentions it in dialogue or thought as if it’s something that greatly affects him and then it’s barely discussed and dropped again.

The potential for a great story was there, but it missed the target for me.

This is this first book I've read by Madeleine Urban and I really like her writing. I have no idea how I never came across any of her other books but I will defintly be checking them out.

This was a great HEA story and I quite enjoyed the jock/nerd plot. I really liked how she showed in her writing both sides of being an athletic and academic and how they were really not that different.

Great writing. ( )

This is a really sweet love story about two guys who never got to know each other when they were younger even though they graduated together. As they moved into their adult roles they still seemed to be in separate circles. When Brandon is giving no choice in helping out Jake with the baseball team they connect for the first time and get to know one another and develop a friendship. It was fun knowing how they each felt about each other bouncing around what they were feeling. The only negative was the way that homeschooling was portrayed as leading to Brandon's shyness and feelings for being an outsider. Having raised several homeschool boys so far I can tell you that it's their personalities that lead them to be outgoing or shy not how they were schooled. ( )
