William Goldman's modern fantasy classic is a simple, exceptional story about quests?for riches, revenge, power, and, of course, true love?that's thrilling and timeless. Anyone who lived through the 1980s may find it impossible?inconceivable, even?to equate The Princess Bride with anything other than the sweet, celluloid romance of Westley and Buttercup, but the film is only a fraction of the ingenious storytelling you'll find in these pages. Rich in character and satire, the novel is set in 1941 and framed cleverly as an "abridged" retelling of a centuries-old tale set in the fabled country of Florin that's home to "Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passions."… (mere)
Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Hunters. Bad men. Good men. Beautifulest ladies. Snakes. Spiders. Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passion. Miracles.
NOTE a strong bias because the movie is the best thing I've ever experienced.
Never in my life have I seen a movie so dutifully adapted. I got bogged down a bit reading Goldman's bits about his life in the beginning. Especially when he goes on about how much he hates his wife and thinks his kid is overweight. Not a fan! Anyway. The rest was so good it got four stars anyway. I really liked Morgenstein's parenthesis/author's notes/what have you. Kind of reminiscent of the author's notes in early 00s fanfic. ( )
The story itself is wonderful and deserves five stars. If you've seen the movie, not much of significance was left out. However, I found the author's introductions (there are two of them in the 30th anniversary edition) extremely tedious. I just had to skip over them. That's what dropped my star rating. ( )
Good book! It was nice meeting the characters in the book in words. I think that I would have been happy with the movie representation if I had read the book before the movie. Also, I liked the extra stuff at the end that movie doesnt show ( )
The book is clearly a witty, affectionate send-up of the adventure-yarn form, which Goldman obviously loves and knows how to manipulate with enormous skill.
