I loved the way that the protagonist, on holiday and at a loose end, picks up a book of Tolstoy short stories and finds himself profoundly disturbed. And the way the author points out the significance of the character in bed next to his wife traitorously fantasizing about the banal teenager he's courting. The book was well-written and engaging, but I haven't yet finished it because when I got to the actual adultery... personally, I find that adultery is intrinsically boring. ( )

This is a book about a marriage and its failure. I found it to be a little too matter-of-fact in places; not telling enough of the story of the emotions. It's also a bit of a mixed genre . . . a bit of crime thrown in to a story which is primarily about relationships from the perspective of a middle aged man. I guess if it's a story by a man, writing about the experience of a man, you can't expect too much focus on emotions, can you? ( )
