Hvor hjertet er af Billie Letts (whymaggiemay)
whymaggiemay: This book is very reminescent of Where the Heart Is. Both are a quick read and carry many of the same emotions.

Another great book by this author. An easy read about an orphaned sister and brother and how they get from South Dakota to Nevada. Lutie is 15 and has a definite attitude and the brother is 11 going on 60- he is a wise/smart beyond his years. They drive to Las Vegas to track down their father, who after finding the prison is is in, ends up being dead. A heart wrenching read.

I listened to this book on Audio CD. I absolutely loved the story of this sister and brother trying to make it on their own. I would highly recommend. ( )

Interesting but the subject was too depressing for me (homeless, orphaned kids in Las Vegas). I really liked the younger brother throughout or I may not have been able to get through the worst parts.

Fifteen-year-old Lutie McFee and her 11-year-old brother Fate are living in Spearfish, South Dakota, with their absentee father's girlfriend, Floy. Their mother died years ago and the two children have lived with their drunken father and his succession of girlfriends but Mr. McFee left the children behind two years ago and headed for Las Vegas. After Floy suddenly dies, Lutie and Fate decide they should go after their father before the two of them end up in foster care. Lutie and Fate head off in Floy's car even though Lutie has never driven before and somehow they make it to Vegas in one piece. Dear old Dad died several months earlier while incarcerated in the local prison and now the children are homeless orphans. As they live in the car, Lutie falls victim to the seamier side of Vegas to earn money. Lutie falls deeper into trouble as Fate worries about their very survival but all the while a kindly stranger is keeping watch over them.

This was just an awful story. I usually enjoy Letts' novels but this one is too over the top. Lutie is just a hateful character, especially to her sweet young brother. The kindly stranger and the story line he provides is too unbelievable for words. Skip this one.

Lutie McFee struggled into the too tight red, sleeveless turtleneck, smoothed it across her ribs, then checked herself out in the mirror of the Wal-Mart dressing room.
