I had mixed feelings about this book. The reason I liked this book is because it focuses on alternative ways to deal with bullying. In the book Baseball Ballerina (B.B.) is tormented by twin bullies. After striking out of a game because of the bullying, B.B. employs the help of her coach to put an end to the bullying. I think it is really cool how the author has B.B. approach an adult and find a humor but still civil way to end the torment. This overall theme is really great for student’s to talk about and apply to their own situations. Also, overall, the book has a good rhythm for students’ needing assistance with reading.
However, the connection to the ballet part of “Baseball Ballerina” is weak. I believe this is a sequel to another book entitled “Baseball Ballerina,” but only once in the book does the author describe B.B. being in a ballet class. The first book may have described B.B.’s ballet training in more depth, but for the sake of this single book, I find the connection to the rest of the book weak. The main idea of this book is to be true to yourself, regardless of other's ridicule. ( )
