Odin as an eagle, Loki as a fox, and Thor as a Bear. Characters borrowed from Norse Mythology to produce a short story worthy to sit beside the classic tales. A lame human boy saves the day! ( )

It is just plain fun. The only down side was its brevity. ( )

Charming. And credit to Adam Stower for the pictures which are an important part of the charm. ( )

Contrary to what you might expect Odd isn't an unusual name. It means the tip of the blade where Odd comes from. He, however is regarded as odd and unusual. And unlucky. His father died. Odd himself was injured when cutting a tree. And his mother has remarried.
Now it seems that winter is lingering too long, the villagers are becoming antsy.
Odd decides to leave, and, in woods he finds company in the form of a fox, bear, and eagle. Animals that are not what they seem.

This is a lovely little story. Aimed at children it also has gorgeous illustrations by Adam Stower which really add to the atmosphere. It only took one sitting to read, and not s long sitting either, but it was well worth the reading. Thoroughly enjoyable. ( )

Odd lives in a Norse village with his mother and step-father. When winter refuses to end and life becomes intolerable for Odd, he sets out for his father's old shack in the woods, but he is interrupted by a fox, who leads him to a bear trapped between two trees. The fox, bear, and eagle turn out to be Loki, Thor, and Odin, trapped in animal form and thrown out of Asgard by the frost giant, angry about the way the gods cheated the frost giant who built the wall around Asgard out of payment. Odd agrees to help the three gods and they return to Asgard, where Odd convinces the frost giant to go home. Freya rewards the gods by returning them to their original forms, and Odd by repairing his leg (ableist?) and sending him home. His mother has left his stepfather, and Odd finds her and offers to take her home to Scotland.

Quotes

"We won't die....But we'll get hungry. And we'll get more wild. More animal. It's something that happens when you have taken on animal form. Stay in it too long and you become what you pretend to be." (Thor as a bear, 39)

If magic means letting things do what they wanted to do, or be what they wanted to be... (Odd, 97)

"No. He doesn't learn. None of them do. And they don't change, either. They can't. It's all part of being a God." (Freya to Odd, 108) ( )

Det är en liten medryckande saga om mod, mognad och försoning med sin livslott. Hur otroligt det än kan verka, när man står på botten av ett köldhål, visar Neil Gaiman att även den strängaste vargavinter har ett slut.
