(previous volumes of Antique Bakery reviewed here)

(4/5) Volume 2 of Fumi Yoshinaga’s pastry & yaoi series. I continue to adore both her artwork and her wonderful interpersonal dramas.

So this series continues to be about 70% food porn by page count. Even someone like me, with absolutely zero culinary skills (I ate Wagon Wheels and cucumbers for breakfast/lunch today, for reference) thoroughly enjoys the loving detailed poured into each of the Bakery’s creations. (This is definitely something I’m thinking is a Yoshinaga hallmark, given how some of the later volumes of Ōoku have the same exacting attention to culinary detail, just for the Edo period).

The slice-of-life elements continue to develop as we learn more about the backstory of Keiichirou Tachibana, primarily through the introduction of his (hopelessly inept) “shadow”, Chikage. Keiichirou gets most of the character development this volume, and does a wonderful job of ending the volume on a surprisingly ominous note.

Yoshinaga continues to have wonderful comedic timing, and I particularly appreciate the way she works in a certain weariness about everyday life with zany, over-the-top antics. Wonderfully done.

Thanks again to officialao3fandomlastforever for the recommendation. If anyone ever has any suggestions for media for me to consume, feel free to toss it in my Ask box. ( )
