Maybe it is the time of the year getting to my head, but I could not help revisiting this amazing story about retaining hope and faith in the things we believe in. Although I am an adult, and do not believe in Santa anymore, I remember the joy that believing he was real had brought me as a child. The main character, a young unnamed boy, is invited onto a fantastical expressway that will lead him to Santa Claus, who many of his peers believe to be a myth/legend. ( )

The conductor invites him to board the Polar Express, a train filled with children on their way to the North Pole. The train takes the children to the center of the city, where Santa and the elves have gathered for the giving of the first gift of Christmas. The boy is chosen to receive this first gift. The illustrations were created with oil pastels. This worked out great, the qualities of the light at night by mixing color really bring out the ambiguous hues of colors in low light. The illustrations were beautiful especially the ones of the snowy nights. ( )

This is my favorite Christmas book and the illustrations make it even better. I find that this book is good for all ages, young or old because they are so joyful and even just looking at the images could tell the story as a whole. ( )

Read aloud
This book follows a very doubtful young boy as he takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole. Our young hero embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. This is a good book for a read aloud because it can seem a bit longer and daunting of a read, and a teacher could discuss different themes with their class. There are countless discussion points to be brought up throughout this book as well, which are best discussed through a read aloud.

Mr. Van Allsburg works effectively combining the sinister and the sentimental, but it would take a poet-sociologist to explain precisely why these dark, moody sculptural pastels somehow evoke feelings of glad tidings and joy.
