"The Bluest Eye" is told through the eyes of of girls growing up in a brutal, uncaring, violent world, abandoned emotionally, intellectually, socially, physically and morally by the adults around them. They’re left in ignorance and punished and blamed for not knowing better. They’re able to assess the faults of their elders and yet mimic them in their own social circles. It’s a stark and painful depiction of the desperate condition we – all of us -- have allowed human society to devolve into. ( )

This is the first book by this author I have read, though I've heard much about her. I guess given all I have heard and that this book notes on its cover that it is an Oprah's Book Club selection, I expected great things of it--or at least greater things than I read. However, I have had similar reactions to well lauded movies and books so don't let my review stop you if you think it is something you want to read.

This book was on the local YMCA book exchange shelf and I chose it thinking I should at least read one title by the author. ( )

The Bluest Eye has some moments of incredible lyrical beauty and manages to pack much character history and motivation into a brief text that circles around scenes of trauma in a way that certainly marks many of the characters and unfortunately in the case of Pecola, comes to define her.

Let’s be clear, all of Toni Morrison’s works are worth the read. This particular novel examines the obsession with beauty and how it is linked to racism, classism, and gender.

This was a very intense book. But just so well written. The very first 2 pages - which didn't even yet introduce us to any of the characters - were in some ways so simple and yet already so powerful. The book is structured switching back and forth between third person and first person. Between each, not only is the tone different, but so is the scope each endeavors to convey to readers. Towards the beginning, I thought how ridiculous Claudia and Frieda sometimes sounded in their logic, but as the novel progressed, I realized that they only seemed that way from the perspective of an adult. I feel like Morrison really captured how children think and process the world and part of that is sometimes thinking you know everything when really your education and experiences on how the world works has only begun.

Another of the strong points of this novel is that all characters are so fully human in their flaws and many of them deeply believing they are doing right/best by others and themselves. I feel like there is so much more to be gotten out of this book so I'll definitely want to reread it again in the future. And I will even more definitely be reading more of Morrison's books.

Content Warning: domestic violence/abuse, toxic relationships, animal abuse, rape, incest, shaming of rape victims, pedophilia, descriptions of sex ( )

I have said "poetry." But "The Bluest Eye" is also history, sociology, folklore, nightmare and music. It is one thing to state that we have institutionalized waste, that children suffocate under mountains of merchandised lies. It is another thing to demonstrate that waste, to re-create those children, to live and die by it. Miss Morrison's angry sadness overwhelms.

And it is the blackness that accounts for, that creates, the vacuum edged with distaste in white eyes.
But we listened for the one who would say, “Poor little girl,” or, “Poor baby,” but there was only head-wagging where those words should have been. We looked for eyes creased with concern, but saw only veils.
